Case study · Those Rambling Fools

A band site that plays

A band writing original music from Kos, needing somewhere to be heard that is not a streaming profile identical to every other streaming profile.

The problem

Every band has the same links to the same platforms, so the site itself has to be the thing worth visiting. It also has to be a real site underneath the interaction: gigs people can find, a story worth reading, and enough structure for a search engine to understand that this is a music group with releases rather than a page of animation.

What I built

  • A working vinyl record player as the centre of the page: the interaction is the point, not decoration bolted onto a template.
  • Separate routes for the story and for upcoming gigs, so each is its own indexable page that can be linked and shared on its own.
  • MusicGroup and MusicAlbum schema naming the members and the releases, which is what lets a search engine present the band as an entity rather than a string of text.
  • The heavy interaction is kept off the critical path, so the content is present in the served HTML rather than waiting on the animation to finish.
  • Privacy and terms as real routes, because a site collecting anything at all needs them and they cost nothing to do properly.

Where it stands

Four indexable routes rather than one long scroll, so gigs and the band's story can rank and be shared separately.
The band is described in structured data as a music group with named members and releases.
The site links back here without a nofollow.
